    im a virgin and my mom wants me to go to the gynecologist. can a pelvic exam, or any of the routine checkups you perform affect the hymen?

    I grew up thinking that at 18 years old every woman needed a pelvic exam, but nowadays the doctors are saying that it is not necessary if you are not sexually active.

    You really only need a pap test to look for cervical cancer, and have an exam to be screened for sexually transmitted infections, if you are sexually active.

    On the other hand, if you are having trouble with your periods or other symptoms, seeing the ob/gyn may be a good idea. Just tell the clinician that you have never had vaginal sex, so they know.
