    Question

I have been dealing with depression since 7th grade. In the past, I have cut myself, but very few people have found out. My mom is hesitant about putting me on Meds, but she doesn't know about what I have done. My family is close, and it would hurt them so much to know, I don't feel like I can tell them, but I scare myself sometimes. If I scare myself with my own thoughts, how could I ever tell them how I feel?

    Answer

    Dear Teen:

Self mutilation, such as cutting yourself on your arms or legs, is a sign of depression. Many people feel that this visible sign of pain helps relieve their psychological pain. It is a big red flag to say that you need to see a mental health professional who can diagnose the problem and treat the symptoms. It is important to get help because it is difficult to stop on your own without emotional support and understanding what causes the feelings of wanting to cut yourself. There is more on our website
