    Question

For the past 3 years I have not been able to maintain a normal eating regime. I try to time when I will eat but I keep snacking in between. I have tried seeing a counsellor and dietician but even though they guide me I still think about food all the time, and with it, my self image. I am 5'2 and weigh 125 lbs. I used to be 110 lb, however I smoked then. I seem to eat to pass the time and achieve a sense of fulfillment. How can I stop thinking about food, and find a way to eat normally? I am student now and have allot of free time. Is it that I just need to be more disciplined and more busy? Or do you think it is something that needs to be addressed by a specialist? Thank you.

    Answer

Snacking and thinking about food can be a problem both because there is so much food around or advertisements of tempting things to eat. Additionally some people are biologically made so that they crave food, especially carbs and fats more than others. (yes, it just isn't fair!) You indicate that you have some ideas that work for you such as keeping busy. Doing things like studying in the library where food isn't around, getting aerobic exercise, arranging to be with friends at difficult times can all help. If you cut back on foods that are high in carbs and stop unhealthy snacking you will eventually see that the craving lessens. Sometimes going back to the nutritionist or therapy for another round is necessary. That kind of support can help. Sometimes it's a little easier to think about staying healthy rather than how you look. This can be more positive and less stressful. Count every little success and keep at it. Good Luck!
