    Question

My girlfriend is on the patch, we had sex for the first time 10/1/04 no condom was used as she told me the latex made her swell up, I pulled out. This was her last patch in the cycle so she should have started her period on or around 10/5/04 we have had no sexual relations prior to this. She was having cramps and nausea, went to the hospital on 10/14/04 and they told her she was pregnant. She told me she started her period on 10/06/04, now its 10/17/04 she tells me she didn't have a period at all. Friends have come to me and told me that she spent the night at another guy's house on 9/25/04. I'm a college student Biochemistry major so I did the math. Her last period was between 9/7-9/10 so she should have not been ovulating around the time we had sex. Would conception on 10/01 stop menstruation on 10/05/04? I thought implantation usually stops menstruation which would have occurred 7-11 days later?

    Answer

Well there are a number of issues here--

Pregnancy, particularly in young women who are having intercourse with young men can occur ANYTIME. Women will get pregnant when they are having their periods. They will get pregnant and then bleed some. Young women (having sex with young men) are incredibly fertile. This is why the Rhythm method does not work.

Now all the other information that you have acquired is theoretically true. Most people ovulate about 2 weeks before there period. Most people don't bleed if they are pregnant.

In this particular case I think you are wondering if she got pregnant on Sept 25. That is possible. But if she was on the Patch and it failed she may have ovulated right when she was having sex with you. And she might have had a little spotting and hoped that was her period. It's hard to know. Paternity testing can't be done until after the baby is born--but is accurate. Good Luck.
