    Question

I've been with my boyfriend for quite awhile now and have tried on several occasions to break up. But everytime I do, he threatens to commit suicide? What should I do? How do I get out?

    Answer

This is understandably a very difficult situation to be in. It is unfair of your boyfriend to threaten you with suicide if you leave him. It may be just an empty threat, but it is hard to know. The best thing to do would be to talk this over with a trusted adult, preferably a school counselor, teacher, parent or friend who could help you problem solve how to communicate with him.

If you think there is a danger that he will really act on his suicide threat when you break off the relationship, you need to tell an adult who can share this burden with you and make sure that he is in a safe environment. When you do break off the relationship I would emphasize that you still care for him and want him to take care of himself. Strongly encourage him to get help from a professional for his feelings of dependency on you and probable depression.
