Question
When I have been drinking and I ejaculate, I have an urge to urinate that will not subside until I finally fall asleep. I know this is not a STD or STI, as my girlfriend and I have been tested, what could it be?

| Alcoholic beverages and caffeinated products, such as coffee, tea and most sodas, are all diuretics. That means they cause you to urinate. In that respect, people can actually get dehydrated with them. For example, if you have a cup of coffee, you need two cups of water to make up for it because you will lose the water with the increase in urination. This is the likely cause of your experience.
Another reason for the urge to urinate is the sensitivity of the bladder, particularly in some people, to these beverages. The bladder is a muscle and it can be hyperactivated, or go into spasm, from coffee and other beverages.
For patients with a problem of having to urinate at night, we suggest they avoid these beverages at least 2-3 hours, and in some people 5-6+ hours, before they go to bed.
