    Question

Wrestler age 15 at 5'10" and weighing 139 and wants to go down to 130 by September to wrestle in tournament. Should parents be concerned? We are.

    Answer

Making the weight in wrestling can result in some athletes taking drastic measures such as purging or taking laxatives which may be harmful. Some wrestlers spent excessive time in saunas to lose weight. This can produce dehydration and hyperthermia. Extreme caution is indicated.
