    Question

I don't know what's wrong with me... I cry uncontrollably, I feel alone, I feel like nobody understands me, I self-mutilate, and I'm always sad... What's wrong with me? Am I depressed? Am I a loner? What? Please answer.

    Answer

Dear Teen: You have symptoms of depression and fortunately there is a lot of help available for this problem. Many people who experience depression have uncontrollable crying and self mutilate as a way of expressing their pain. Also when you are depressed many people feel alone because they tend to withdraw and even isolate themselves. You may feel like a loner, but it is very important to talk with someone about these symptoms. Tell your parents you need to see a counselor because you do not understand these feelings. If you feel you cannot talk to your parents have your school counselor or physician help you figure out a way to get help. You do not have to struggle alone and it is important that you get help now so that your symptoms do not become worse. Your behavior is very understandable to someone who knows about depression.
