Question
Why is it that teenagers often cut themselves to make them feel better about themselves or to releave painful feelings that they are going through?
Answer
Dear Teen: Self mutilation, such as cutting yourself on your arms or legs, is a sign of depression. Many people feel that this visible sign of pain helps relieve their psychological pain. It is a big red flag to say that you need to see a mental health professional who can diagnose the problem and treat the symptoms. It is important to get help because it is difficult to stop on your own without emotional support and understanding what causes the feelings of wanting to cut yourself.
