    Question

If you are 17, under your parents insurance and care, when you visit the gynecologist, does the doctor have to tell your parents if you are sexually active?

    Answer

If you are lucky enough to have a school nurse, she can probably answer this question - it varies by state. Or, call the doctor's office - anonymously if you do not trust your doctor - and ask your question - it depends on the laws in the state. You also need to know if they can suppress a bill, and if your insurance company will send something to your parents documenting the charges they paid for you. I am sorry it is not an easy answer. In CA, it is illegal for the doctor to tell the parent anything related to reproduction after age 12 (unless the child is in danger). If the doctor says s/he will tell, or cannot protect how it is billed, then find a local teen clinic or Planned Parenthood.
