Question
Itching in pubic region that looks like a half ring. I also have rings that have been itching like crazy creating a ring on inner thighs. What the heck is this? I recently had sex and am feeling like I have caught something. If so I am in trouble cause girlfriend is going to flip.
Answer
The itching and the ring-like appearance sound much more like a fungal rash, like "jock itch." This is not usually thought to be a sexually transmitted infection, but sometimes partners can share the same fungal strain after skin contact. It's safe and probably worth a try to use an over-the-counter product such as clotrimazole 1% cream (Mycelex, Lotrimin AF, or generics) to the area affected, twice daily (AM and PM) for 2-3 wks. Sometimes it's necessary to use the cream 2-3 times weekly thereafter to keep it from coming back. If this does not produce at least some relief promptly (within 3-4 days), you should make an appointment to have your doctor take a look.
