Question
Hi, my girlfriend and i have been having sex for over a year. we are monogamous and do not use condoms. every time we have sex my penis gets really red and rashy. sometimes i get red spots on the head and shaft. for the past few days the red rash has started to flake. We've seen several regular doctors and they all suggest i go to a dermatologist. i know this is not an STD, but it still bothers me. i can't afford a specialist. what can we do? please help. also if this sounds like something you know please inform me as the name of this affliction. thank you very much for your time.
Answer
There are several rashes that can occur on the penis which are not sexually transmitted. Sometimes an irritant reaction can do this, perhaps to something your girlfriend is using. You can also see a rash called "lichen planus" frequently on the penis. Another is psoriasis. You can also have a reaction to a medication if you take the medication intermittently and are allergic to it. A dermatologist can usually differentiate between these rashes. If you can't afford to see a doctor, you can see if your county hospital has a dermatologist who will see patients on an "ability to pay" basis. Good luck!
