Question
At 13 whose choice is it about the parent staying in the room during a physical? My mom insisted it was her right to stay in even though I had to get a full genital exam, and my 10 year old sister was in the room as well.
Answer
I am so sorry that your mom and sister stayed in the room - and did not respect your request for privacy. Your mom has been very familiar with your body for 13 years, and it is time for her to start considering that you are growing up - and let you become more private. Ask to talk with her about how you felt - make sure she knows you love her - it is hard for us to let our teens grow up!
You can check with the nurse at the doctor's office and ask about the "Adolescent's Right to Confidential Reproductive Care" in your state, but in CA it is 12 - and doctors usually ask moms to stay outside a few minutes during the exam to ask questions about sexual activity in private. You can also ask to talk to your doctor and request his or her help next time in respecting your privacy. Good luck - growing up is fun - and challenging.
