Question
I just turned 20 and have not had a gyn exam yet. I had something bad happen as a child and now have a very hard time letting anyone touch me in anyway. My doctor wants me to get examined but just the thought of it makes me very anxious. what can I do so that i don't freak out if i do go ahead and get the exam done.
Answer
I am sorry about your previous experiences. This, unfortunately, is common. Let your doctor know that you might have trouble with the exam, and let him/her know why.
They can offer you some medicine to relax you. You might also want to bring a friend with you. That may make you feel safer.
Often I will do a little bit of the exam and then in a month or two try a little bit more as you get used to the doctor and the procedure.
If you don't feel like the doctor is listening to you have an agreement with your friend that you will just leave and find another doctor that does listen to you.
Good Luck, I know this is scary.
