    Question

I have not had sexual contact in three months but recently the skin of the inner lips has become somewhat raw and there are two small paper cuts. i'm not on any birth controls and this isn't near my period. i wouldn't say that it burns or itches just that its tender especially when i pee.

    Answer

There can be many reasons that the skin of the vulva would be raw. These could include a yeast or bacterial vaginal infection, herpes outbreak, allergic reaction (most commonly to feminine hygeine pads), or trauma. If the tenderness is accompanied by a foul odor, abdominal pain, or an increase in vaginal discharge then it would be a good idea to see a doctor to help determine if a vaginal infection may be the culprit. Yeast or bacterial infections can occur at any time, and sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea or chlamydia can cause symptoms long after exposure. If there is no discharge or smell, then you can likely watch it for a while. If it is herpes the "cuts" would resemble small round blisters or mouth sores with a red base and usually would heal in about a week. If it is simply trauma or a sensitive skin reaction it will also heal in time. The key is that herpes is likely to recur, while the others may not (unless you continue using a feminine hygeine pad you are sensitive to!). There is a culture that a doctor can do of the raw area if a blister is present to see if it is herpes, but once the blister pops it is too late. You can apply Neosporin ointment or vaseline to the raw area for comfort since it will prevent the urine from touching the raw skin and causing the burning. An ice pack can be very comforting if it is swollen. Avoid sexual contact while the skin is broken or healing.
