    Question

I want to know what the procedure is and the cost involved when getting the IUD.

    Answer

The cost of an IUD insertion appointment and IUD itself varies with insurance coverage. You should try to call your insurnance before having one placed to make sure what type of coverage your insurance company provides. The insertion of an IUD is done in the clinic. Inserting the IUD does cause cramping and bleeding so it is good idea to take NSAIDs, (i.e. naproxen or ibuprofen) before the visit to help with this. The IUD is basically placed through the cervix (which sometimes needs to be dilated a little to allow IUD to pass through) and placed inside the endometrial cavity. The actual procedure is short, about 5-10 minutes on average.
