    Question

    What causes over prolonged periods

    Answer

The most common reason for young women/teens to have prolonged periods is that they are not having menstrual cycles where they ovulate (make eggs) regularly and don't have the typical pattern of hormone fluctuation. The hormones may rise and fall but not enough to cause the uterine lining to mature all at once and then shed all at once. Other less common reasons are thyroid problems; less common would be bleeding issues. Please see your doctor to discuss this.
