Question
When I put my tampon in, it hurts. Is that normal??
Answer
Tampon insertion should not be painful. You may be nervous and tensing your muscles during insertion. Try to relax and find a comfortable position. Consider using the smallest size tampon and try when your menstrual flow is heavy to help the tampon glide in. You could also try a very small amount of water-based lubricant (such as KY jelly, not Vaseline). You can read the tampon package insert or look online for more detailed instructions on how to insert a tampon properly. You could also ask your mother or aunt or friend for help. Once the tampon is put in correctly, you should not feel it at all.
