Question
It's mostly said on these websites that you should never pop whiteheads, but I've also read that pus builds up because it HAS to come out. So, if we're supposed to ignore the whitehead, then how else is the pus going to come out? Thanks!
Answer
There are two types of lesions called whiteheads: one is a "milium", which is a tiny cyst and has no actual pus in it. These are more common in babies and in older people, and in general don't go away in adults unless the cyst is extracted. The other is a "closed comedone", which is usually associated with acne. This does have pus in it, which means that there is inflammation going on. The way that these go away is with a reduction of the inflammation, which can happen with acne treatment or can happen spontaneously. Both of the above whiteheads can be popped, but you do run the risk of scarring or infection if done incorrectly.
So, what should you do with your whiteheads? If they don't bother you, I would recommend doing nothing. If they are a problem cosmetically, first try some acne medication for it. If that doesn't help, see a dermatologist for further treatment. Good luck!
