Question
My girlfriend has been using the NuvaRing for 6 months. She follows the directions very closely. We are wondering if she can get pregnant if we have sex during the one week that the ring is out? Hoping you can answer this for us. Thank you.
Answer
As long as you use the NuvaRing as directed, you still are protected against pregnancy during the "ring"-free week. Usually the withdrawal bleed (which often people think of as their "period") happens this week. As long as you don't leave the ring out for more than 1 week, the birth control effect continues through the week and until the time that you start using the next ring. The manufacturer of the NuvaRing also has a website that can answer common questions about the Nuvaring: www.nuvaring.com.
