    Question

i was told by a friend that the IUD can cause a female to lose her period when she has it put in? is this true?

    Answer

There are 2 types of IUDs being used in the US. The Mirena IUD has progesterone in it and this does thin the lining of the uterus to the point where many women have scanty or no periods. This is not harmful and doesn't affect future fertility. The Copper T IUD does not have progesterone and does not stop periods; indeed they can become heavier.
