    Question

I lost my virginity a few days ago and now my vagina is itching and I have a discharge. My partner and I used a condom during intercourse but nothing during oral sex. I am pretty sure that both my partner and I don't have any STD. He was tested a month ago. I feel like I have a yeast infection, which I had before, but I am not sure. Can sexual intercourse cause a yeast infection? Can you help me please?

    Answer

Yeast infections are certainly more common in sexually active women. However, they are not usually transmitted by the partner to the symptomatic woman, so we don't consider yeast infections as an STD.

If you have a white, clumpy discharge and itch, then it's OK to treat yourself using an over the counter anti yeast cream or suppository. If your partner has a rash or discomfort, he should be evaluated by his health care provider. Make sure you are using a hypoallergenic condom, with no perfumes or products that might be irritating.

If the symptoms return after treatment or do not resolve, do see your health care provider. But wait a few days after your last intra vaginal treatment, since the medication itself will obscure any yeast so it needs time to clear out of your vagina so a good examination can be made.

You may also drink / eat acidophilus containing milk products. The acidophilus may help re establish the normal acid/base balance in the vagina to discourage yeast growth.

Finally, if you have any concerns about STDs, please see your health care provider even if the current symptoms do resolve after being treated as yeast.
