    Question

Hello. i was wondering, i am a teenager and i am 16 yrs old and i am around 200 pounds and i'm 5'5". Is that healthy to weigh that much at that age and height?

    Answer

It's good that you are trying to be healthy about your body! By the numbers you gave me - your body mass index (which is a measure of your weight compared to your size) is 33-34kg/m2. Even for heavier set people, a body mass index of 24-26 kg/m2 is ideal. This would mean that you should be closer to 140 pounds for a healthy weight.

In this weight obsessed world, I do want you to understand the being overweight or obese is still an issue, because it increases risk of diabetes and heart disease-- even in young people.

You should talk with your doctor about working on a good exercise and healthy eating program to work on your weight. PLEASE, PLEASE do not let this discourage you and PLEASE do not start BAD eating habits, such as starving yourself or binging and purging. These are even more unhealthy for you and often lead to other medical issues as well.

Working in the context of your doctor's office, or even a reputable weight loss program, will give you better long-term results and healthier behaviors.
