Question
Recently I had my yearly exam with my gynecologist. I took blood work and was told I had herpes, but I never had an outbreak ever or any symptoms. How accurate are the blood tests and should I ask my Dr for another test?
Answer
The blood tests, "type-specific" tests for herpes types 1 and 2, are very accurate, are the best way to know whether you really have herpes (aside from swabbing an actual sore to grow the virus). Many who have herpes don't have visible sores, and aren't aware they have it, but can still transmit it to others. If that was the type of test you had, the result is probably true. This a very manageable condition, though, so I hope you have someone, your gynecologist or another doctor, who can discuss it with you if positive.
