Question
I had an abortion about a month ago. For the first few days there was heavy bleeding then spotting. The spotting hasn't stopped. Every other day I get a brown gooey discharge, and then it goes away for a day and returns again with the spotting. Is it possible they didn't get everything out with the abortion?
Answer
It is normal to have some bleeding and spotting after an abortion. The brown discharge that you're seeing is probably residual old blood. If you have return of heavy bleeding (necessitating changing a pad every 1/2 hr for more than 4 hrs straight) or do not get your next menses in the next 1-2 months, you should call your physician for follow-up.
