Question
I am a 13 year old boy turning 14 in three months and I have had lumps under the nipple for a little more than 5 months now. Is that healthy to have it for that long? What can I do to get rid of it besides waiting for it to go away? I am scheduled to see my doctor in a couple of months.
Answer
When boys go through puberty, there are hormonal changes that may cause a lump to develop under the breast. This condition is called gynecomastia and happens in about half of all boys age 12-16. Don't worry, you are not turning into a girl! The lumps under your breasts may be tender for a few months and should gradually become smaller as you grow. See your doctor if the lumps last more than 2 years, enlarge significantly, becomes irregularly shaped or if you have any concerns at all. Hope this helps!
