    Question

I just turned 18 and I want to go see a gynecologist to get checked out and don't want my mom to know. Can I go to any gynecologist I find and have it covered in my insurance? Or do I have to go to my regular doctor?

    Answer

In the state of CA you are entitled to confidential reproductive health care, which means that the doctor cannot tell your mom. However, you have to know if your health insurance sends anything to your mom showing her what was paid for services - if so, she would see that you saw the doctor, what tests were done, and if birth control was prescribed.

I usually suggest teens go to Planned Parenthood instead of their regular doctor, to avoid the insurance company risk, but you can call your doctor's office and ask if you can be seen without your mom knowing, too. Good luck!
