    Question

If I tell my doctor that I'm cutting myself or if she sees scars on my arms, will she tell my parents?

    Answer

Issues related to mental health are considered confidential in the state of California UNLESS you are in danger of harming yourself or someone else. But you should let your doctor help you and you can figure out together how to tell your parents. You should not do this alone.

If you are cutting yourself - PLEASE get help so you can learn how to stop this and take care of yourself. Get the help of your doctor and a counselor/therapist. You should also ask your doctor how to get the help of your parents. If fear of what your parents will do or say is an issue - your doctor can help be an advisor and advocate for you. It might not be easy, but believe me, in the long run it will be better than continuing to cut and hurt yourself. Good luck.
