    Question

I've been recovering from anorexia for about 10 months now. I've been eating very well in the last 4 months, but still have gotten my period back. I've talked to my doctor, but i still don't get why. I'm only at about 80% of my ideal weight (i'm underweight), but if i'm eating nutriously, then why won't i get it back? Also, am i healthy yet? I'm 16, 5'3", and weight about 86 lbs. Tips on eating, too?

    Answer

Hello, I am happy to hear that you have recognized that anorexia nervosa is a serious medical condition and are motivated to eat nutritiously and gain weight. Your ideal body weight (IBW) is in the range of about 115 lbs, which means you are seriously underweight. A specialist in Eating Disorders can help you calculate what your personal IBW would be, based on your body frame and previous weight. Many times, you do not get your period back until many months AFTER you reach your ideal body weight.

I strongly urge you to seek help with someone who specializes in Eating Disorders, or knows how to manage it. You also NEED to see a nutritionist who can calculate the number of calories you have to consume each day to achieve your IBW, as well as a therapist or psychiatrist who also specialized in eating disorders. If not, your recovery will not occur, and there are many other complications of anorexia nervosa that could occur as well. Also, until IBW is achieved, you really should see a doctor or nutritionist EVERY WEEK. Please, speak with your parents about seeking further help. I wish you the best.
