    Question

I come home from theater rehearsals starved. I eat a dinner before I go and then the leftovers before bed. I'm gaining weight. What is a good after 9 p.m. snack?

    Answer

If you really are hungry and need a late-night snack, avoid fattening snack foods like chips, candy, cookies and other empty-calorie foods. Instead, choose healthy snacks, like:
    • An apple and two tablespoons of peanut butter: This combination satisfies your sweet and salty cravings, and gives you healthy protein and carbohydrates. Or an apple with low fat string cheese.
    • A few whole wheat crackers paired with low-fat string cheese (whole wheat food items contain more fiber, which can make you feel fuller quicker and longer).
    • Cottage cheese
    • Yogurt and fruit: Try adding some berries to plain, low-fat yogurt for a satisfying treat.
    • Low-fat milk: If you're just a little bit hungry, a nice glass of low-fat milk can fill you up without a calorie overload.
