    Question

I have a question about pregnancy and periods. As long as you still have your period, you can't be pregnant. Is that right? I've heard that you can miss periods but still not be pregnant. Not sure what to believe! Thank you!

    Answer

Some people will have irregular cycles, meaning that they will not always have menses every month and occasionally will skip 1-2 months at a time. Also, some patients will have a little light bleeding during the week they think they should have their menses and are actually pregnant (usually early pregnancy around 4 wks or so).

If you usually have regular, monthly menses that are predictable and have skipped a month, you should check a pregnancy test to make sure you are not pregnant. If not sure about home test results, your physician can order a blood test to confirm if you are pregnant or not.
