Question
Do I have Social Axiety. I'm cool and normal by myself or with friends that I know really well and close to, but it seems like when I get around people I don't so well or even if i do know them a little its just scary. What can I do to resolve it?
Answer
Dear Teen:
This type of reaction around people you don't know well could be termed a type of social anxiety. One thing that helps is to push yourself a little to try low-risk new behaviors. For example, ask people you don't know well a question, and let them do the talking. If you are at a group social event, try talking with just one person. If you just smile and say hello you will be perceived as open and friendly. This may help you feel more comfortable.
Social anxiety is actually very common so you are not alone. Many socially anxious people think everyone is looking at them. In reality, most people are busy thinking about themselves!
