Question
I had a spontaneous abortion almost two weeks ago. My doctor gave me an ultrasound and said the uterus was empty and everything looked normal. I was given a blood test, with the result of HCG Value 546. What does that mean? Also I just noticed I have a brownish red discharge occasionally and an unpleasant odor. No pains or anything though. Is this normal?
Answer
It is normal to still have elevated bhcg level after an abortion or miscarriage. This will gradually decrease back to negative usually within one month after event. We usually recommend to check bhcg levels weekly until levels return to negative. Your monthly cycle should return to normal soon after this.
