Question

I am going to costa rica for a month, and being very pale, I was considering going tanning before I go. It is not hot where I live, and I've heard it's healthy to go tanning a few times before going to a hot place to decrease the chance of burning. Of course I'll be wearing sunscreen when I'm there. I was wondering would it be safer for my skin to go tanning, or not?

Answer

It is safer to NOT go to a tanning salon before your travel. People who go to tanning salons have higher rates of skin cancer than those who do not. The best way to avoid burning is to apply and RE-apply sunscreen regularly, avoid sun exposure during the middle of the day and cover up with light clothing if possible.
