    Question

Hi. My daughter has just turned 9 years old and she is having a light brown discharge. It's quite watery, she is wearing a pad and I have had to change it quite regularly (every 3 hours). It's not heavy like a period, but still not like a regular white discharge. The discharge is light brown but doesn't smell bad and her vulva isn't itchy. Could she be starting her period? Or should I take her to the Doctor for a check up?

    Answer

This could be a period. Have her keep track on a calendar when she has to use pads, and see if there is a cycle. If you're worried, do talk to her doctor, but nine is plenty old enough. This is especially true if she has started to get breasts and hair on her underarms and in her pubic region.
