    Question

I am a 19-year-old male and I want to get a leaner stomach. I am very determined. I have been running three miles everyday of the week and eating only large salads for lunch and dinner. If I keep this up will I see good results?

    Answer

The short answer is yes, you should see results in three to four months. The longer answer is more complicated. A lean stomach is a function of less fat around our middle. There is a great deal we don't know about you, like how tall are you and how much you weight and what your metabolism is -- for instance are you diabetic? In general weight loss is related to more energy expended (exercise and activity) and less calories consumed (diet). The challenge is that often the well-intentioned salad is filled with high-calorie dressing and other items. So be thoughtful about regular exercise and keep your portions down with frequent small meals and you should see results in a few months. Remember, regular exercise is excellent but be sure to mix it up. The same thing every day often gets boring also your body gets use to the exercise. Talk to a local running club about training and then vary the distance and time you spend running and you will be surprised on how quickly you loose weight and how far you will be able to run.
