Question
Hi, I'm 15and Im worried about having sex for the first time. I'm worried about asking my mom for birth conrtol. I have not had sex yet because I'm not quite sure I want to, but I do. It's confusing, but I want to ask my mom for the pill and my boyfriend will wear a condom. What are my chances of getting pregnant?
Answer
I truly believe that you should trust yourself! You say you are not sure and that is perfectly natural. There are a lot of risks and responsibiities that come along with sex. In addition, your cervix is still developing and more vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections if you start having sex before the age of about 18!
One way to bring the conversation up with mom is to tell her you learned that girls should have the three HPV shots after age 11 but before they are sexually active to protect themselves from HPV and cervical cancer. You would like to make an appointment with your doctor to talk about the shots. Then when you see the doctor, because of your age, she will hopefully ask mom to leave, then you can ask about birth control, too - so you are prepared. Good luck and nice job worrying about protecting yourself - but trust yourself, too! There is no hurry!
