    Question

How should I approach my teen if I find alcohol and marijuana in her bedroom. She has denied using.

    Answer

Well, you are on shaky ground because you violated her privacy and went through her room, and she is going to be mighty unhappy if you confront her. I would start with basics - building some respect and trust between family members. Finding fun things to share, time to talk about everything that goes on in the life of a 17-year-old - good, bad and ugly, letting her know that you are worried about her, love her, and are not out to "catch her" doing anything, but do want her to know she can talk to you about anything without fear of punishment. If things are too far gone for that, find a counselor that your whole family can see to help you make things better! Good luck!
