    Question

Hi, in the past I've been involved in abuse of a few substances, I know i need to quit but want to do it without telling people. Can you give me some steps?

    Answer

Dear Teen: Fortunately, you recognize that you need to quit and that is the first big step. The problem for you is in order to quit you do need to tell some people, but only people who are able to help you and will keep your problem confidential. A first step to get immediate help would be to call your local Narcotics Anonymous organization which you can find in your local Directory. This organization is devoted to helping people lead drug free lives and has many meetings that you can choose to attend various times of the day and week. Some of these meetings will be just for young people your age, but visit several until you find the right one for you. You can hear the speaker and discussion without having to identify yourself. The main program is called the 12 step program and the first step is to admit you need help. Ultimately the best way to stay off drugs long term is to continue to share your issues with others who have learned how to manage their lives without substance abuse.
