James Hartford, M.D., received his M.D. degree from Dartmouth Medical School in 1989, after graduating from Princeton University. He completed an internship in general surgery at Harvard-New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston and a residency in orthopedic surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire. He also completed a fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery at Stanford University Medical Center.

Dr. Hartford served for six years as assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and was residency director for Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center, both in Lexington. He was also chief of Orthopedic Surgery at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Lexington. In those roles, he gained substantial experience with hip and knee replacements, including many complicated cases. Dr. Hartford has also been published and lectured extensively on joint replacement and other topics in orthopedic surgery.
