To honor achievement
Jack S. Remington, M.D.
In 1962, Jack Remington, M.D., was recruited to the Palo Alto Medical Research Foundation as the first investigator with a full-time faculty appointment at Stanford University. Since then, Dr. Remington has been Chairman of the PAMF Research Institute's Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases. The majority of his studies have focused on the pathogen Toxoplasma gondii, which can cause swollen lymph nodes, spontaneous abortion or severe disease in the fetus and newborn, eye disease in children and adults, and life-threatening disease in the brain, lungs and heart of immunosuppressed patients. Dr. Remington published a paper in 2000 on distinguishing new from existing toxoplasma infections and, as a direct result of his research, the uncertainty of whether or not a woman is infected during pregnancy has been reduced by 90 percent. In 2000, Dr. Remington also celebrated his 70th birthday. To honor this occasion, a symposium was held in January 2001 at which 200 of the most prominent infectious disease specialists in the world -- many of them longtime friends and colleagues of Dr. Remington's -- made presentations in immunology and infectious diseases. In the near future, he will be refocusing his efforts to more clinically and diagnostically oriented work.
