To calm the mind: Meier Gift of Visual Imagery
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) provides invaluable information for physicians, but many patients experience discomfort due to the loud noise of the MRI machine. Some patients are actually unable to complete their exams due to claustrophobia. This is no longer a problem at PAMF, thanks to a gift from long-time donors Linda and Tony Meier. The Meier Gift funded the purchase of a state-of-the-art system that lets patients listen to soothing music through high-quality earphones that block out all MRI noise while still allowing two-way communication between the patient and the technician. The system also allows patients who are otherwise unable to tolerate an MRI to put on "virtual reality" goggles and watch a video during their exams. "The new MRI system is not only better for our patients, but it is also good for the staff," comments Dr. Solon Finkelstein, head of PAMF's Radiology Department. "Because the staff now has a first-rate facility, they can do a better job for our patients. To obtain this technology through the generosity of the Meiers makes all of us more proud of our work."
Just as creative expression lifts the spirit, the presence of fine art can inspire healing. Thanks to community support of the PAMF Art Fund, we continue to grace our new campus with paintings and sculptures created by local artists, and donated by patients, staff and their families.
