    Nutrition and Cancer

"We are what we eat" is a common saying with some truth behind it. Research is increasingly showing that diet can play an important role in helping the body to heal and in reducing some of the negative side effects of cancer treatments. Nutritionists now recommend that cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy follow a low-fiber diet and avoid certain foods that can worsen side effects such as nausea, abdominal discomfort and constipation.

    Food and Side Effects

The severity of some side effects from radiation therapy can be reduced with certain food choices. The following patient handouts contain dietary recommendations that may help.

    • Constipation Management
    • Diarrhea Management
    • Mouth Sores
    • Nausea Management
    Summary
A fiber-restricted diet limits the amount of vegetables, fruits, cereals and grains that you can eat. It also limits to 2 cups per day the amount of milk and milk products, such as cream, yogurt and cheese that you can eat. Milk does not contain fiber, but it leaves a residue in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract that can irritate the bowel and cause diarrhea and cramping. The diet is also helpful for the many cancer patients who have a hard time digesting the milk sugar lactose. Good eating habits are important, including eating regular meals in a relaxed atmosphere. Use this sample diet as a guide and discuss any changes with your doctor or nurse.
