Designed to provide expectant parents with the knowledge and tools they need to get breastfeeding off to the right start, topics will cover:

Moving Through Pregnancy (Palo Alto)

This three-session series covers a wide variety of topics relating to pregnancy, infant care and safety. Patients are encouraged to take this class as early in their pregnancy as possible in order to take full advantage of the education, support, and referral to clinic and community resources.

Preparing for Birth (Palo Alto)

Prepared Childbirth classes are designed to help expectant parents ready themselves for the practical, physical, and emotional challenges of childbirth. Participants will receive instruction in all aspects of childbirth and receive training in specific skills to cope and respond to the sensations of labor and delivery. Lamaze skills are taught along with additional support information and techniques gathered from the teachers' many years of collective experience.     Preparing for Birth - A Refresher (Palo Alto)

    This series offers "just the basics" and is only suitable for those who have previously been through a comprehensive childbirth program. Also covered:

    • Labor & Delivery
    • How is it different?
    • When to go to the hospital
    • What about my older child? Proper care ideas, support, visits, etc.
    • Labor & Delivery management, options, plans
    • Breathing, relaxations skills
    • Comfort measures for birth
    • VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) if needed

    Preparing for Childbirth Without Medication (Palo Alto)

    The focus of the session will be on alternative pain-coping techniques such as breathing, position changing, relaxation, massage, and visualization. The class will also address issues such as birth plans and advocacy.

    Your Baby's Doctor Talk

    As part of the Preparing for Birth program, you are invited to attend any of the following lectures given by physicians from PAMF's Pediatrics and Family Medicine Departments. These talks should help you become acquainted with some of our physicians, as well as give you information regarding newborns, baby care, choosing a doctor, etc. The presentation that will follow the physician will be led by a childbirth educator and will focus on immediate postpartum issues. You are welcome to attend as often as you like.
