Breastfeeding Help for You and Your Baby
Why do some mothers and babies need help with breastfeeding?
Breastfeeding is a natural process, but it is not instinctive. The mother and baby actually learn how to breastfeed together. In some societies, a breastfeeding woman is a common sight and women learn by growing up in this environment. However, in our society many new mothers have never held a newborn infant prior to having their own and are unfamiliar with breastfeeding. A lactation consultant can help new moms develop the skills needed for successful breastfeeding.
How do I know if I need help?
A visit with a lactation consultant can be helpful if you are:
- Confused and frustrated by breastfeeding
- Overwhelmed by breastfeeding
- Unsure that the baby is feeding well
- Experiencing pain while breastfeeding
- Not enjoying breastfeeding
What is a lactation consultant
A lactation consultant is a specialist in all aspects of infant feeding. She can give you the help and support you need to enjoy breastfeeding and will work with you to resolve any problems that may occur. As she does this, she will also share her wealth of knowledge about newborn behavior and infant care.
How do I find a lactation consultant?
If you are having difficulty breastfeeding while in the hospital, arrange a consultation with the hospital lactation consultant before you are discharged. If feeding difficulties continue or develop after you are discharged, you can contact one of our consultants listed below.
