Preparing for Birth Class

Class Overview:

This class is designed to help prepare expectant parents for the practical, physical and emotional challenges of childbirth. Participants will receive instructions in all aspects of childbirth and receive training in specific skills to cope and respond to the sensations of labor and delivery. All PAMF childbirth educators are certified teachers in the psychoprophylactic method, also known as Lamaze. Lamaze skills are taught with additional support information and techniques gathered from the teachers' many years of collective experience. Areas of instruction include:

  • Labor and delivery
  • Coping with labor: Lamaze skills, comfort measures and support
  • Hospital births: policies, procedures and options
  • Electronic fetal monitoring
  • Medications and anesthesia
  • Medical equipment and procedures: IV's, forceps, episiotomy, etc.
  • Understanding the medical indications
  • Options for birth
  • Cesarean birth: indications, practical tips during and after
  • Postpartum: most class series include a reunion class of former graduates to come and share their experience about birth, postpartum, breastfeeding and/or early parenting
