More than 21 million people have diabetes. A third of those people do not even know that they have it.
When diagnosed with diabetes, many people think their bodies have failed them, or vice versa. But a diagnosis of diabetes doesn’t mean it’s time to give up—just the opposite is true. If you have diabetes, you’re still in control. There are many positive steps you can take to achieve good health and well being, and PAMF’s team of registered dietitians and diabetes educators, Diabetes Program classes and support groups can help you do it!
Are You At Risk?
Are you at risk for diabetes? Take an online test to measure your risk for diabetes on the American Diabetes Association (ADA) website. (accessed on 10/2011)
Here are factors that put you at risk for diabetes:
- You are 45 or older.
- You are overweight.
- You have high blood pressure or high triglycerides.
- A member of your immediate family has diabetes.
- You are Latino, African American, Native American, Asian American or Pacific Islander.
- You've had a baby weighing more than 9 pounds or were diagnosed with gestational diabetes during your pregnancy.
Classes & Events
Living Well With Diabetes -- The Living Well with Diabetes class series is for patients with type 2 diabetes who are either newly diagnosed or have not received diabetes education in a couple of years.
Living Well with Pre-diabetes -- This course covers the risk factors, consequences and management of pre-diabetes. You will leave with a better understanding of diet and exercise management and have tools to manage your health.
