Sweet Success Program

The Sweet Success program at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF) helps pregnant women who have diabetes (type 1 or type 2) and those that develop gestational diabetes. Through Sweet Success, women at any stage in pregnancy – including from before conception to the postpartum period – can receive diabetes health education, care and management designed to meet their unique medical needs. Your primary care doctor or OB/Gyn can refer you to the program.

What makes Sweet Success at PAMF special?

PAMF features a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care, which means that the specialists in the Sweet Success program will work closely with your primary care and/or OB/Gyn doctor to take care of you.  Women in the program receive dietary and lifestyle counseling, as well as a personalized education and treatment plan to ensure they have the healthiest pregnancy possible. A dietitian who specializes in helping diabetics control blood sugar levels through what they eat and drink will also work with you and your doctor to set up personal goals and meal plans.

How will my blood sugar be monitored?

Women in the Sweet Success program receive a glucometer – a special device for measuring the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood – and training in how to monitor their own blood sugar.

Some women in the program may also need to use insulin to control their blood sugar during their pregnancies. They will receive training on how to take their insulin and have their treatment closely monitored by our team of professionals.

How will I learn about my diabetes?

The Sweet Success Program at PAMF features both individualized and group education, as well as counseling during regular medical appointments throughout the pregnancy and postpartum period.
