Philosophy of Care
My practice focuses on optimizing the functional rehabilitation of total hip and knee replacement patients. I use the latest advances and technologies, resulting in less invasive surgery and improved pain control for my patients. Specializing my practice allows me to provide advanced care and the safest, most comfortable procedures, which result in the best outcomes. I participate in all aspects of your surgical care, and try to be available for all urgent issues, rather than relying on the doctor on call.
I am one of the most experienced physicians in Northern California utilizing anterior approach total hip replacement with image intensifier control on an orthopedic table. X-ray imaging on an orthopedic table allows more accurate placement of the components of a total hip replacement, which increases stability and decreases stress that can cause wear. Computer-navigated total knee replacement allows more accurate placement of the components on the bone as well as improved soft tissue balancing. I use spinal or epidural anesthesia rather than general anesthesia whenever possible to avoid nausea, vomiting and postoperative lethargy. I use a multimodal oral pain protocol to keep you comfortable and encourage accelerated rehabilitation. Almost all of my patients are able to go directly home from the hospital, rather than to a postoperative rehabilitation center. My excellent team of physician assistants, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, administrators and my physician colleagues all appreciate the benefits of this approach.
I have been involved with El Camino Hospital for most of my life. My family has lived in nearby Los Altos for four generations. I did my high school work-study program at El Camino, where many of my friends' parents were physicians. I have been privileged to practice there for more than 25 years, taking care of the families of many friends and partners. I have been a patient there myself. Most of my children were born at El Camino, and I have been blessed to watch them thrive in this community.
After graduating from UCLA Medical School, I did my orthopedic residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and fellowship at the Kerland-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic. I joined the Sunnyvale Medical Clinic in 1987. We became Camino Medical Group and later PAMF. Being part of a large multispecialty group makes me confident that all my patients' needs will be addressed. Continuously improving my practice to focus on your specific needs is very gratifying.
