Philosophy of Care
The word cancer imparts such a negative image that upon diagnosis your life seems to shatter instantaneously. I view the role of a cancer specialist as one in whom trust is placed to put the pieces back together, one by one. Treatment care upholding the latest data and evidence; enrollment in clinical trials where available; symptom management whether undergoing cancer therapy or not, holding hands and lending a patient ear whenever possible – these are some of the pieces that we can put together as practitioners in the art of medicine and healing. These are also areas of emphasis in the "whole person care" philosophy taught for decades at my medical school, Loma Linda University. I feel humbled to have been allowed to partake in the medical as well as emotional healing of my patients for the last decade and have learned greatly from it.
